Two Northwestern students were arrested early Friday morning in connection with a traffic accident, said Cmdr. Michael Perry of Evanston Police Department.
Jad Najjar, 21, was charged with driving under the influence and criminal damage to property, Perry said. Roberto Wilczynski, 22, was charged with disorderly conduct after police said he repeatedly interfered with field sobriety tests Najjar was receiving.
Najjar was driving eastbound on Elgin Road when he lost control of his silver, 1998 Lexus and it spun out, crashing into a tree before jumping up on the median, Perry said.
He told police he was on his way back from Maggiano’s, 175 Old Orchard Center, at Old Orchard Shopping Center in Skokie, where he had been drinking, Perry said.
Najjar said he left the stoplight and proceeded east on Elgin when he lost control of the car, and it ended up on the median, Perry said.
Responding officers could smell alcohol on Najjar’s breath and his eyes were bloodshot, watery and glassy, Perry said.
While officers were conducting field sobriety tests, Wilczynski arrived on the scene. He recognized Najjar and attempted to run up to him, Perry said.
Officers asked Wilczynski to step back onto the sidewalk because he was interfering with testing, Perry said. When Wilczynski refused he was led to the sidewalk where he was told to stay or he would be arrested.
According to police reports, Wilczynski stayed on the sidewalk but told police to go ahead and arrest him — he would help his friend. As field tests were being completed, Wilczynski again ran up to Najjar and grabbed his shirt, Perry said.
Wilczynski was told to go back to the sidewalk, but he refused. After several such requests, officers attempted to remove Wilczynski, Perry said.
Wilczynski pulled away from police and tried to grab Najjar again, Perry said.
Officers told Wilczynski he was under arrest, but he resisted while they attempted to handcuff him, Perry said. Wilczynski ended up on the ground, where he received several small cuts on the face.
Police said Wilczynski appeared highly intoxicated and questioned their authority to keep him from Najjar.
Meanwhile, Najjar admitted to police that he was driving too fast, Perry said. He also told police he was upset over a recent breakup.
Najjar’s car was towed by Northshore Towing, and both he and Wilczynski were taken to EPD, Perry said.
Najjar refused to take a Breathalyzer test and had his license suspended, Perry said.
Wilczynski is scheduled to appear at Circuit Court in Skokie on Nov. 27. Najjar’s court date is set for Dec. 11.
