A man arrested Wednesday was charged with possession of a controlled substance and driving under the influence, police said.
Timothy Lee Sturdivant, 40, also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia and traffic violations, said Cmdr. Michael Perry of Evanston Police Department.
Perry said police found cocaine and a glass pipe when Sturdivant was stopped for erratic driving.
Sturdivant, of Chicago, was driving southbound on the 900 block of Chicago Avenue when police saw his car veer partially into the oncoming lane of traffic, Perry said.
Before being stopped by police, Sturdivant nearly ran a red light and barely missed running into a construction sign when his car once again drifted over the center line, Perry said.
He said police stopped Sturdivant on the 400 block of Chicago and asked him to exit the vehicle for sobriety tests.
Officers smelled alcohol on Sturdivant’s breath and his eyes were bloodshot, glassy and watery, Perry said.
According to police reports, Sturdivant could not complete the sobriety tests and told police: “I’m a little tipsy. I can’t do this.”
Sturdivant could not provide a valid driver’s license, Perry said.
He was taken to the EPD station, where he was given a breathalizer test. His blood-alcohol content was .098, Perry said. The legal limit is .08.
During a search of his car, police found four rocks of cocaine hidden in the flap of a baseball cap, as well as a glass pipe concealed in an empty cigarette box, Perry said.
An assistant state’s attorney approved felony charges. Sturdivant is scheduled to appear Nov. 26 at Circuit Court in Skokie.
