Johnson’s score balloons to 5-over in Day 2 at NCAAs
Northwestern golfer Tom Johnson struggled on the second day of the NCAA championships in Columbus, Ohio, shooting four bogeys in the final nine holes of his second round to finish at 5-over 147. That score leaves him tied for 109th place going into the final two days of competition.
Johnson took to the course early Thursday morning to finish his first round, which had been suspended by rain. He began the second day at 1-under but finished the morning at 1-over.
He then shot a 4-over 75 in Round 2 despite sitting at even-par after nine holes.
Rain stopped play for the second straight day Thursday, but Johnson was already in the clubhouse when officials stopped competition.
He is scheduled to begin his third round at about 9 a.m. today, although the schedule could change because of the weather. Round 4 will be played Saturday.
NU has 47 named to spring Academic All-Big Ten team
Forty-seven NU athletes were named Academic All-Big Ten, the conference announced Wednesday.
NU totaled 125 players this year between the fall, winter and spring seasons, the most in school history.
Marine Piriou, the Big Ten Player of the Year in women’s tennis, was named to the team. She was joined by fellow women’s tennis players Ruth Barnes, Lia Jackson, Stacy Kokx and her doubles partner, Jessica Rush.
Softball was NU’s most represented team with nine selections – Gretchen Barnes, Brie Brown, Jenny Glonke, Katie Gross, Rane Gunderson, Carri Leto, Cindy Muran, Brett Nakabayashi and Lauren Schwendimann – although NU did receive a total of 16 “at-large” selections for lacrosse (three) and fencing (13), which are not played under the Big Ten umbrella.
Joining their softball counterparts were six baseball players: Brandon Ackley, Andy Adams, Frank Favia, Todd Morgan, Gabe Ribas and Travis Tharp.
Golfers Elizabeth Burden, T.C. Ford, Emily Gilley, Lauren Grzebien, Hana Kim, Chris Thayer and Bjorn Widerstedt made the team, along with three men’s tennis players – Russell Bennett, Joost Hol and Ahmed Wahla.
