Northwestern forwards Tavaras Hardy and Winston Blake were recognized Tuesday when the 2002 men’s basketball All-Big Ten teams were announced.
Hardy was named third-team All-Big Ten by the coaches, while Blake was given honorable mention. No NU player made the media team.
Indiana sophomore Jared Jeffries was named Big Ten Player of the Year and was joined on the coaches’ and media’s first teams by Ohio State’s Brian Brown, Wisconsin’s Kirk Penney, Michigan State’s Marcus Taylor and Illinois’ Frank Williams.
Wisconsin’s Bo Ryan was named Coach of the Year in his first season at the helm. Minnesota’s Rick Rickert was tabbed Freshman of the Year. Dane Fife of Indiana and Travarus Bennett of Minnesota shared Defensive Player of the Year honors.
The coaches’ second team consisted of Illinois’ Brian Cook, Indiana’s Tom Coverdale, Ohio State’s Brent Darby, Iowa’s Reggie Evans and Rickert. Purdue’s Willie Deane, the Big Ten’s leading scorer this year, replaced Darby on the media’s second team.
