A 21-year-old Chicago man stood handcuffed along Sheridan Road around 1 a.m. Sunday, the product of nearly three hours of policing by the late shift of University Police.
With many students out due to Gone Greek Night, a National Pan-Hellenic Council party at Norris University Center and the warm weather, UP expected to be busier. But until 12:54 a.m., Officer Mike Clark did not issue a single ticket. His night consisted of responding to a property damage call in the fraternity quads, monitoring the radar gun for speeding vehicles and driving in circles throughout campus.
“We’re not always the busiest,” Clark said during a ride along with a Daily reporter. “This job is 99 percent boring.”
Clark’s night picked up when he spotted a Volkswagen Golf speeding through a red light at the intersection of Foster Street and Sheridan Road. After stopping the driver on the 2100 block of Sheridan, a search of the car revealed about a dozen beer bottles, some of them empty, wrapped in a garbage bag.
As more UP squad cars pulled up, four officers helped Clark search the car and administer sobriety tests to the driver, who identified himself as Jos
