The Evanston Public Library’s new Book Sale Room will debut Thursday with the start of the library’s fall book sale.
The third-floor room replaces a smaller, windowless room formerly used by the library for sales, said Kate Todd, the library’s executive secretary. The new room only will be used during book sales, she said.
Volunteers from the Evanston Library Friends organization will oversee this fall’s sale, which run through Sunday, Oct. 28. All proceeds from the sale benefit the library, and 80 percent of the money raised will go toward the purchase of new books, CDs, videos and other library materials.
About 1,000 people are expected to attend the four-day event, Todd said. ELF volunteers usually hand out numbered tickets to help with crowd control, she said. The group members work year-round and organize up to four book sales a year.
The sales raise thousands of dollars for the library, Todd said.
“It’s a pretty big deal,” she said. “It’s a substantial amount of money.”
The books being sold are poorly circulating or excess books from the library’s collection or are donated by the public for sale.
Items for sale include classic titles, fiction, art books, travel guides, mysteries and cookbooks. Select compact discs also are on sale, Todd said.
The sale will open to the public at 6 p.m. Thursday and will continue until 9 p.m. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday the sale will run from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Remaining books and other items will be sold at half-price from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
