Chicago man killed in Evanston

A Chicago man was pronounced dead Wednesday afternoon after being shot multiple times by his estranged girlfriend at an Evanston filling station the night before, police said.

Narcel A. Love, 19, of the 7200 block of S. Talman Avenue in Chicago, was pronounced dead at 1 p.m. Wednesday by officials at Evanston Hospital, according to the Cook County Coroner.

Love was shot multiple times at 8:57 p.m. Monday while he stopped at the Clark Oil and Refining station, 2401 Dempster St., in what police are calling a domestic-related incident, said Cmdr. Michael Perry of the Evanston Police Department. Witnesses and other information led investigators to the home of Love’s girlfriend, Marseilles Genette Redmond, 21, of 6649 N. Newgard Ave. in Chicag Perry added.

Redmond was arrested in connection with the shooting by Evanston detectives early Tuesday morning at her home in Chicago. The charges against Redmond have since been raised after Love was pronounced dead, Perry said. Redmond is now being charged with two counts of first-degree murder for Love’s death, police said.

Several witnesses at the scene were able to provide police with information about the shooting, but details about the nature of the crime were not available Wednesday night, police said.

Redmond’s bond in connection with the killing was set Wednesday for $750,000 by a Cook County Second District Court judge in Skokie, Perry said. The case will go to court Aug. 3.

Perry said police have no other suspects at this time.

Love was a former student at Sullivan High School, 6631 N. Bosworth Ave., who stopped attending in June, 1998 before graduating. The victim’s family members were not available for comment Wednesday night.

Love’s slaying is the first in 13 months in Evanston. In June 2000, two men were charged in connection with the killing of 17-year-old Evanston resident Richard Tinch, who was shot dead on the 1200 block of Fowler Avenue, just a few blocks from the location where Love was killed.

Ald. Lionel Jean-Baptiste (2nd), whose ward was the site of both slayings, learned about Monday’s shooting during that night’s City Council meeting. The alderman said he thought first that the shooting involved a resident from his ward.

“It just so happened that it occured in my ward,” Jean-Baptiste said. “Upon reflection … I continue to employ the adults in our community in the development of our youths, particlulary those falling through the cracks, to be sure (they do their) best to redirect their lives so they can become productive adults.”
