At the scene of the crime
Horror movies not chilling enough? Head to the Terra Museum of American Art, 664 N. Michigan Ave., for the exhibit “New York Noir-Crime Photos from the Daily News Archive.” Graphic black and whites of blood spattered corpses and other gruesome shots have prompted warning signs at the front entrance for the first time in the museum’s 21-year history. Avoid the $7 admission by going on Tuesday or the first Sunday of the month. The exhibit runs through Aug. 26.
Competing on scooters
Up early Saturday morning? The Trirollathon at Illinois State Beach Park, located at 1 Lake Front Drive in Zion, kicks off at 7:30 a.m. Bike 50K on roads, paths and forest preserves through Lake County before a 2K bike tour and a 1.5K in-line skate route. The event ends with a final 1.5K on scooters. Entrance to the event costs $25.
The gulf of Indiana
If strenuous exercise isn’t in the plan, try Indiana Dunes National Lake Shore, located at 1100 Mineral Springs Road in Porter, Ind. A leisurely walk to see summer colors and flowers meets at the Porter Beach parking lot north of U.S. 12 and west of Route 49 at 2 p.m. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 219-926-7561.
Dance for all nations
Celebrate international culture at Watusi’s, 1540 W. North Ave., Mediterrano Party. Dance to Arab, Spanish and Indian music Friday nights starting at 10:30. Cover: $5.
Conscientious projectors
Social activism meets entertainment Saturday at the screening of Long Night’s Journey into Day, a documentary of cases heard by South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The screening will be followed by a dialogue on ending racism. The event runs from 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Wild Hare, 3530 N. Clark St. Admission is $5 for students.
Gotta love local arts
Evanston hosts the Ethnic Arts Festival at Dawes Park, located at Sheridan Road and Church Street, from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday and Sunday. The fair features international folk arts, ethnic food, music and poetry readings.
