The District 202 Board of Education will discuss a variety of issues affecting Latino students at its meeting tonight.
Board member Elizabeth Tisdahl said because the board has received 34 recommendations to improve Latino schooling from a district committee at its last meeting, the board does not need to take much action.
“The administration is quite capable of implementing its own recommendations,” Tisdahl said.
At the board’s April 23 meeting, a committee presented the suggestions from Latino parents of Evanston Township High School students, some of whom have formed the Latino Parents Union.
The district said many of the presented recommendations, such as bilingual report cards and improvement of communication between the high school and Spanish-speaking parents, likely will be implemented in upcoming months.
But Tisdahl said the board needs to address other Latino achievement issues, such as bilingual education.
“We need to have some discussion about the bilingual education program, and whether it is the best way,” Tisdahl said.
At Monday’s meeting, the board will review department reports and discuss possible solutions, including tutorial programs.
Soledad Renteria, a spokeswoman for the parents union, previously has said the 34 recommendations from the committee do not go far enough.
She said the district should hire a Latino advocate for ETHS’s Latino students, which make up 7.4 percent of the school’s 3,120 students. Other areas, such as teachers’ treatment of Latino students, also need improvement, Renteria said.
The district is already following one of the committee’s recommendations: having a Spanish-speaking interpreter attend tonight’s meeting.
Tonight’s agenda also includes a vote on contracts for renovations to ETHS’s main office and renovations to its information services and registrar’s office. The board will meet at 7:30 tonight at ETHS, 1600 Dodge Ave., in room N112.
