Medill Assoc. Prof. Virginia Carroll died from complications of hypertensive cardiovascular disease, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said Tuesday.
Carroll, 53, was found dead in her Rogers Park condominium Monday morning by a neighbor and her building manager.
A popular professor hired by the Medill School of Journalism in September, Carroll’s death is being mourned by the many friends she made in her short time at Northwestern.
A public memorial service will be held May 14, at 5 p.m. in Fisk 217, said Julia Rodgers, director of external relations for Medill.
Several people will speak at the ceremony, including Medill students and faculty members and some of Carroll’s former colleagues from her careers before teaching, Rodgers said.
Following the service, a reception will be held at the John Evans Alumni Center, 1800 Sheridan Road.
Prior to coming to Medill as a magazine professor, Carroll was a reporter and editor for The News & Observer of Raleigh, N.C., and served as the bureau chief in Houston and Detroit for Newsweek magazine.
Carroll had been an instructor in the Graduate Magazine Publishing Project this quarter.
The project will continue despite Carroll’s death, with several Medill faculty members stepping in to teach her classes until the end of the quarter, said Prof. Abe Peck, chairman of Medill’s magazine program.
