Field hockey drops pair of 2-1 games; Yates sets saves record

Goalkeeper Jess Yates became Northwestern’s all-time career saves leader, but the NU field hockey team fell to 4-7 after losing 2-1 in overtime to both Ohio State and Ohio University on the road over the weekend.

On Friday, the Wildcats took an early 1-0 lead on Ohio State (8-4) as Colleen Hotz scored in the first half. But NU failed to register a shot on goal in the second half and in overtime — getting outshot by the Buckeyes 20-3. Ohio State’s Buckey Marlje van Nouhuys scored in overtime for the win. In the game, Yates made nine saves to break the seven-year-old team record.

Ohio University’s Amanda Voros scored twice on Sunday in leading the Bobcats (4-6) to the win. Wendy Roberts scored for NU in the first half, tying the score 1-1. Both games were held in Columbus, Ohio.

NU will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., this weekend to play Michigan on Friday and Kent State on Sunday. The Cats are now 1-1 in the Big Ten.
