Men’s soccer faces DePaul in make-up of Wednesday game

The men’s soccer team looks to snap its six-game losing streak when it travels to play DePaul today at 5 p.m. Both teams are 0-6. The game is a make-up of Wednesday game, which was postponed because of rain.


Men’s golf to defend title at Ping/Golfweek Preview

The No. 10 Northwestern men’s golf team travels to Raleigh, N.C., this weekend to particpate in the Ping/Golfweek Preview. Last year, NU rallied from three strokes down on the final day, to win the team championship at the Preview.

Senior Luke Donald took first in the Preview last year with an 8-under par 208. He enters this year’s tournament as the No. 1 ranked golfer in the country.

In its first event of the year, the Wildcats took fourth place as team Sept. 10 at The Ridges/Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate in Johnson City, Tenn. Freshman Tom Johnson shot a 4-under 212 to tie for third individually. Donald tied for 11th at 2-under.


Volleyball hosts defending national champion Penn St.

After winning three matches last weekend, the Northwestern women’s volleyball team will welcome defending national champion Penn State to Welsh-Ryan Arena at 7 p.m. Saturday.

As a tune-up for the No. 3 Nittany Lions, NU (3-7) will open Big Ten play by hosting Indiana (9-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. NU lost two matches each to Indiana and Penn State last year.

Last week, Penn State coach Russ Rose became just the fifth coach in NCAA history to win 700 matches. The Nittany Lions are 11-1 after losing to UCLA in August.


Women’s golf opens season at Fossum Invitational

Coming off last season’s first-ever NCAA championships appearance, the No. 21 Northwestern women’s golf team opens play this weekend at the Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich.

Last year, NU finished third of 18 teams at the tournament. Sophomore Elizabeth Burden led the Cats with a 12-over 228 and finished in eighth place individually. Both Burden and junior Emily Gilley have qualified to participate in this year’s U.S. Women’s Amateur.

In July, Gilley defeated Burden by to win the Illinois Women’s Open. Gilley sank a 22-foot birdie on the 17th hole and went on to the win.


Northwestern hosts third Women in Sport Weekend

All three of Northwestern’s women’s sports teams will play at home this weekend as part of the school’s third-annual Women in Sport Weekend.

Field hockey will host games at Lakeside Field Friday at 3 p.m. vs. Michigan State and Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Providence.

The women’s soccer team is also in action at Lakeside Field, hosting Big Ten matches on Friday at 4 p.m. vs. Minnesota and Sunday at 1 p.m. vs. Wisconsin.

And the women’s volleyball team gets into Big Ten action, as well, hosting Indiana Friday night and Penn State Saturday night at Welsh-Ryan Arena. Both matches will begin at 7 p.m.
