Chris Ward, Daily photo editor, won The Kay Krieghbaum Memorial Photographic Contest on Wednesday for a picture illustrating feminism at Northwestern.
“We felt it was a compelling photo that told a story and was well-composed,” said Mary Dedinsky, the board chairwoman of Students Publishing Company, which sponsors the contest and is The Daily’s parent company. “There were tough contenders, but this one was clearly the favorite.”
Ward’s photo beat about a dozen other entries for the $100 prize.
His photo illustrated an April nyou cover story about feminism on campus. It depicts several prominent campus feminists behind the symbol for women. He used a wide-angle lens to make the feminism symbol jump out at readers while including the women in the shot.
“It’s one of those few pictures that I’ve taken where I thought about what I wanted to do with the picture beforehand and it came out exactly,” Ward said. “It’s probably my favorite photo I’ve taken this year.”
The photo is featured in the special section “The Year in Photos,” a compilation of the best pictures of the school year, which appears in this issue of The Daily.
