University Police issued an alert Wednesday about a suspicious man who has been seen driving around Northwestern’s South Campus.
The suspect has been described as a neatly dressed white male between 25 and 40 years old, from 5-foot-8 to 5-foot-10 and weighing about 150 pounds. The man was seen driving a newer-model, four-door Mercedes Benz that is silver, beige or champagne in color, said Lt. Rich Stampanato of UP.
A female NU student told police that a male suspect pulled his vehicle in front of her around 9 p.m. Monday and tried to convince her to get into his car. When she declined, the man tried to block her path. The student reported seeing the man again on University Place at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Stampanato said.
Another female student told police that a male suspect approached her at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday in front of Unicorn Cafe. She said he asked her to join him for a cup of coffee, according to police. When she declined, the man left the area, Stampanato said.
“It made me feel weird,” the student told The Daily, “but I didn’t feel threatened because there were plenty of people around.”
Panhellenic Association President Sarah Personette said Panhel has sent e-mails to its sorority delegates to warn them about the man.
“Reaching out through the sorority system has been a way of linking with lots of people, especially those who live in the sorority quads where the guy has been seen driving around,” Personette said.
Panhel has asked students not to walk alone and to avoid the man at all costs, Personette said. If students do come in contact with the man, they should call UP right away, she added.
Stampanato said police were still investigating the incidents Wednesday night.
“We are trying to alert people so they’re aware of this and take the necessary precautions,” he said.
