Rain postpones Cats’ game against top-seed Minnesota
The Northwestern baseball team has waited since the 1995 season to play in the postseason. Heavy rain forced them to wait one more day.
The sixth-seeded Wildcats (30-25, 13-15 Big Ten) will take on No. 1 seed Minnesota (36-20, 20-8) at noon today in a first-round Big Ten tournament matchup at Minneapolis. The teams were supposed to play Wednesday evening, but the game was postponed because of rain.
NU will play twice today whether it wins or loses. Should the Cats lose to the Golden Gophers, they would have to play again at 3:30 p.m. If they win, the Cats will play again at 7:00 p.m.
Senior Dan Padgett (6-2) will likely get the start against Minnesota. In his lone start against the Golden Gophers during the regular season, Padgett picked up a complete-game 8-2 win and struck out six batters. But that was back on April 15 in the friendly confines of Rocky Miller Park.
Minnesota enters today’s contest with the second-best team ERA in the conference. NU enters with the third-highest team batting average.
