Funding ‘inferno’ leaves groups hot under collar

Although Alternative Spring Break received the funding it appealed for at Wednesday’s Senate meeting, co-director Katie Stearns said she did not leave happy.

“It was impossible to leave that meeting feeling good, no matter how much money you had gotten for your student group,” said Stearns, a Speech senior. “There is not (just) one factor for the cause of last night’s inferno in 2 E/F.”

When it came down to the last 12 groups, only about $7,000 remained in Senate’s pool of money after it allocated funds according to the Student Activities Finance Board’s recommendations. The lack of funding near the end added to the tension and frustration felt at the meeting.

Two of Northwestern’s largest cultural groups —Alianza and the Asian American Advisory Board — received $18,000 of the $670,000 Associated Student Government allocated to student groups.
