Two men were arrested Tuesday in connection with multiple charges, including one felony and two misdemeanors, in south Evanston, according to a news release.

Police stopped the men in the 1200 block of Howard Street when they noticed the passenger, an 18-year-old Chicago resident, was not wearing a seatbelt, the release said. The car smelled of marijuana, and all four occupants of the car were asked to exit the vehicle.

One of the occupants, a 25-year-old Chicago resident, had a handgun in the door storage compartment next to him, which officers noticed when he got out of the car. According to the release, when officers checked the vehicle, they recovered the handgun, which had the serial number removed. They also discovered 13 grams of marijuana in the vehicle next to where the 18-year-old had been seated.

A prescription pad with loose prescriptions written for codeine on it was also recovered, the release said. All four men were taken to the police station.

The 25-year-old now has a warrant out for his arrest by the Illinois Department of Corrections because he is currently on parole, the release said. He was also charged with unlawful use of a handgun by a convicted felon on parole, a felony, and two counts of possession of a firearm with the owner’s identification card, misdemeanors.

The 18-year-old was charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, and a traffic citation for not wearing a seatbelt.

The man who had the prescription pad, a 26-year-old Chicago resident, is still in custody and has yet to be charged.
