South Evanston fire displaces 18 residents
December 5, 2016
A fire broke out in an apartment complex in south Evanston Monday morning, displacing 18 people.
Evanston Fire Department crews were dispatched just before 9:30 a.m. to the 600 block of Sherman Avenue after receiving reports of smoke in the building, EFD division chief Paul Polep said. Upon arriving, they encountered heavy fire and smoke in the second and third floors of the building. Companies from Skokie, Wilmette and Glenview were called in to help.
The blaze was brought under control in about a half hour. Polep said it appeared the fire started on the second floor and spread to the third, affecting six units total. Those displaced are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, Polep said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. No civilians or firefighters were injured.
