Slowing swims 400, 800 free in Rio

Incoming freshman Valerie Gruest Slowing finished 22nd in the 800-meter freestyle and 29th in the 400-meter freestyle at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, failing to advance to the final in either event.
Slowing, representing Guatemala, swam 4:19.58 to finish fifth in the first heat of the 400 free Aug. 7. American Katie Ledecky had the top time of the prelims at 3:58.71.
Slowing returned to the pool Aug. 11 for the 800 free, where she finished third in the first heat with a time of 8:39.80. Ledecky also finished first in the 800 prelims with an 8:12.86.
Slowing holds Guatemalan national records in four events.
