Dennis Green, a former Northwestern coach, died Thursday night at the age of 67 due to complications of cardiac arrest, his family said in a statement.

Green coached the Wildcats from 1981-85, had a 10-45 record and won the conference’s Coach of the Year award in 1982 after going 3-8. Green was the first black head coach in the history of the Big Ten and was only the second black head coach in NCAA history.

After leaving NU, Green went on to coach at Stanford and in the NFL for the Minnesota Vikings and Arizona Cardinals.

Green is survived by his wife and four children.
