A 45-year-old man is in critical condition after being shot in the head Tuesday a block from Evanston Township High School, police said.

The Evanston resident and several other individuals were in the backyard of a residence in the 1900 block of Emerson Street shortly after 5 p.m., Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said. Four men then approached through an alley and opened fire, Dugan said.

The man was shot once in the head and transported to Evanston Hospital, Dugan said.

The four men who opened fire fled west on foot. Dugan said shortly after 8 p.m. Tuesday that no one had been arrested in connection with the shooting.
