A window washer was seriously injured Wednesday morning when he fell six stories while on the job at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in north Chicago.

The 30-year-old man fell at about 8 a.m. from scaffolding outside the building in the 200 block of East Huron Street, Chicago police said. The man remained in critical condition in the hospital as of Thursday afternoon, police said.

Corporate Cleaning Services, the man’s employer, said in a statement that he was cleaning the hospital’s windows while working from a chair before the fall. This is the first incident of its kind in the company’s 21 years, the statement said.

“This is one of our most experienced and dedicated employees, and we are focused on providing assistance to him and his family as he undergoes various medical tests and procedures,” the statement said. “We are also working closely with investigators so that we can better understand exactly how this happened and to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”
