Northwestern has hired former New Mexico assistant ‘A Havahla Haynes as head coach of the cross country program, the University announced Thursday.

Haynes replaces April Likhite, who retired from college coaching last month after 11 seasons coaching the Wildcats.

“I am excited to be a part of the Wildcats family and heading back to the Midwest,” Haynes said in a news release. “April Likhite has been an invaluable mentor for me as a coach, and has created an outstanding culture around this program that I’m looking forward to building on.”

After an All-Big Ten cross country career at Wisconsin, Haynes served as an assistant coach at NU before spending five years as associate head coach at New Mexico.

The Cats finished 10th out of 14 teams at the Big Ten Championships last fall.
