A 39-year-old Evanston resident was arrested in connection with possessing over 6,000 grams of marijuana in downtown Evanston near Northwestern on Friday afternoon, police said.

The Evanston Police Department Special Operations Group, in conjunction with a United States Postal Interdiction Team, conducted a controlled delivery of the package with suspected illicit substances. Police officers dressed as mail carriers brought the package to a home in the 1800 block of Sherman Avenue at around 1 p.m., Evanston police Cmdr. Joseph Dugan said.

Using a search warrant, police opened the package after it was delivered and discovered about 6,500 grams of cannabis inside.

The man was charged with felony cannabis possession and has not yet had a court date scheduled, Dugan said.
