Evanston Township supervisor Gary Gaspard has resigned after less than five months on the job.
In a brief letter to Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and city clerk Rodney Greene on Thursday, Gaspard wrote the position required “more time than I had anticipated.” His resignation is effective today.
City manager Wally Bobkiewicz said the Evanston Township board will discuss the appointment of a township supervisor before the City Council meeting Monday night. The council members also serve as township trustees.
Gaspard was elected in April. He said this morning he would not immediately comment further on his resignation.
In August, the Human Services Committee panned Gaspard’s first township budget proposal, refusing to recommend it to City Council. Some aldermen called it unrealistic and urged Gaspard to start over from scratch.
“The budget that was presented to us was completely out of line,” Ald. Coleen Burrus (9th) told Gaspard at the meeting. “We have a fiscal problem in this community, and to present a budget like this — I think it’s insulting to the township trustees.”
Ald. Delores Holmes (5th) said she had to meet with Gaspard twice before the meeting because his original budget was “embarrassing.” He initially defended his plan but then promised to revise it.
Evanston Township assessor Bonnie Wilson declined to comment on Gaspard’s resignation this afternoon, saying she will instead make a statement at the council meeting.
