Face paint, an indie-rock vibe, electronic pop beats and a carefree attitude: Dillo Day’s daytime headliner will remind Northwestern what summer is supposed to feel like. Walk The Moon will kick off the 2013 Dillo Day lineup Saturday with positive energy and catchy lyrics, playing from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.
The Band
Hailing from Cincinnati, the four-member band released its first album “I Want! I Want!” in 2010. Since then, Walk The Moon released a second, eponymous full-length album in 2012 and an EP titled “Tightrope” earlier this year.
Nicholas Petricca is the lead singer who also plays keyboard, with Kevin Ray on bass, Eli Maiman on guitar and Sean Waugaman on drums, but at some points during the performance you’ll probably see them all with a drum or two.
Many of their songs focus on the experience of growing up, especially their hit single “Anna Sun.” The lyrics from other songs such as “Next in Line” and “Tightrope” are able to brilliantly capture the feeling of a relaxed but energized summer day.
The Sound
Although each of the band’s tracks has a dance-y pop vibe, the band seems to have more of an alternative or electronic sound depending on which song you listen to. What separates Walk The Moon from other pop artists is their unique mix of synthesized sounds and driving guitar. They playfully toe the line between pop and rock.
You’ll definitely want to know some of their other popular songs besides “Anna Sun.” The synth-driven and fast-paced “Quesadilla” will have you yelling “hey” along with them, the more rock-based “I Can Lift a Car” really utilizes background vocals and my personal favorite, “Shiver Shiver” lives up to its name with incredibly beautiful yet effortless falsetto vocals.
The Concert
When I saw Walk The Moon live over the summer in Orlando, Fla., it was opening for Neon Trees and did an amazing job of pumping up the crowd. Not only are its songs upbeat and optimistic, but its live performances are also overflowing with energy. Walk The Moon will most likely be sporting face paint, something I definitely encourage the audience to do as well.
What I’m looking forward to most is seeing once again how easily Walk The Moon brings out our inner kids and gives us a much-needed taste of summertime.
