A two-flat house at 2111 Emerson St. caught fire around 2 a.m. today, an Evanston fire official said.
The fire started in a living and dining room on the first floor of the building, which housed three families, said Dwight Hohl, life-safety services division chief. Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames, which were still confined to the room, he said.
No injuries were reported, although the Red Cross evacuated the occupants, Hohl said. One occupant, a man in his 70s, was admitted to Evanston Hospital for smoke inhalation, he said, adding the man was in stable condition.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
