It’s January again, which means a new year for movies. While you are making those New Year’s resolutions, here are some of 2013’s most anticipated films you can resolve to see.
“Oz: the Great and Powerful” (March 8): Starring big names such as James Franco, Mila Kunis and Rachel Weisz, this movie tells the story of a Kansas stage magician who crash-lands in Oz, prequeling the beloved children’s classic “The Wizard of Oz.” With these kinds of actors attached and Disney backing the movie with a huge special effects budget, it will definitely be worth a watch.
“Iron Man 3” (May 3): Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark returns to face one of his greatest nemeses, The Mandarin, when his private life is threatened. The third film in one of the best superhero franchises of all time, there is nothing more fun than watching RDJ’s Stark on screen.
“The Great Gatsby” (May 10): Based on Fitzgerald’s classic novel, this Baz Luhrmann film follows Jay Gatsby, an enigmatic newcomer to the New England elite in the midst of the Roaring ’20s. This movie will be gorgeous and decadent, and maybe it will finally win Leonardo DiCaprio his Oscar.
“Star Trek Into Darkness” (May): The second installment in J.J. Abrams modern Trek saga, this film finds a new and mysterious villain played by British powerhouse Benedict Cumberbatch. Whether he’s a new version of Khan or not, this movie will be fantastic.
“Man of Steel” (June 14): Finally a new Superman movie to help us forget “Superman Returns.” Henry Cavill looks amazing in the suit, though there is little else known about the movie so far. But really, what else do you need besides a few cool flying shots to get interested?
“This is the End” (June 14): James Franco, Seth Rogen and a crew of comedians play themselves in a film about celebrities facing the apocalypse. The premise is both ridiculous and intriguing, plus they were able to sign Emma Watson, so it must be good.
“Monsters University” (June 21): A prequel to “Monsters, Inc.” that tells the story of how Mike and Sulley met at college. There’s really nothing else to say about this movie — that alone tells you how perfect it will be.
“World War Z” (June 21): Brad Pitt stars in this film based on the novel of the same name about a U.N. employee trying to stop a zombie pandemic. This movie is getting a ton of buzz, and with former “Lost” writer Damon Lindelof on the screenplay, I can understand why.
“The Mortal Instruments: The City of Bones” (Aug. 23): For any “Twilight” fans or followers of the Mortal Instruments young adult book series, this film adaptation about a girl who uncovers the supernatural underworld of New York after her mother goes missing is sure to be a hit.
