The Big Ten announced Tuesday that Rutgers has joined the conference as its 14th member, one day after the conference announced the addition of Maryland.
The Big Ten Council of Presidents unanimously approved Rutgers’ application this morning and the school is expected to join the conference for the 2014-15 season. The move gives the Big Ten a larger footprint in the Mid-Atlantic region and access to the New York television market.
“This is a historic day for Rutgers University,” Rutgers athletic director Tim Pernetti said in a statement. “It is an honor to join such a prestigious conference and begin our partnership with the outstanding institutions in the Big Ten. There is no finer conference in the nation that combines top-notch academics and athletics.”
Rutgers is currently a member of the Big East and will need to pay an exit fee of $10 million. The Big East has been dissected by other conferences during this period of realignment and Rutgers is the fourth school to announce its departure in the past two years.
By adding Maryland and Rutgers and expanding to 14 teams, the Big Ten will need to reconfigure the two football divisions. There are reports that Illinois will switch into the Legends Division, which would allow the Terrapins and Scarlet Knights will join the Leaders Division. However, Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany said no talks around division changes have started and nothing has been decided about where the two schools will fit within the divisional structure.
