The New York Knicks announced Tuesday that they have signed former Northwestern forward John Shurna.
The 2012 graduate is the Wildcats’ all-time leading scorer with 2,038 points, also leading the Big Ten last season with an average 20 points per game. Shurna was one of four free-agent signings the Knicks announced. They did not release specific terms of the deal.
The team announcement confirms reports that first surfaced Monday night on Twitter.
“We’re all excited for John to have this opportunity to pursue his dream of playing in the NBA,” NU coach Bill Carmody wrote in a statement to The Daily. “No matter what happens, he’s got a very bright future ahead of him as a professional basketball player.”
Shurna’s greatest attribute is his shooting, especially from 3-point range. Last season, he shot 46.3 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the arc. Shurna showcased his skills for NBA scouts during the Las Vegas Summer League, where he was a member of the Atlanta Hawks. He averaged 3.8 points per game in 15.8 minutes per game.
