A man was arrested in connection with an attempt to steal beverages from Jewel-Osco on Saturday night, police said.
A loss prevention officer saw Mohmmad Mazhar take seven Monster energy drinks, Sprite, Coca-Cola and Red Bull from the refrigerators at Jewel-Osco, 2485 Howard St., and attempt to leave the store without paying for them, Evanston Police Cmdr. Tom Guenther said.
The loss prevention officer tried to stop Mazhar from leaving the store, but when he told Mazhar that he was a loss prevention officer, he attempted to run away, Guenther said. The loss prevention officer caught up with him, and the two started to wrestle before eventually falling to the ground, Guenther said.
The loss prevention officer then read Mazhar his Miranda rights, and Mazhar told the officer that he stole the drinks because he didn’t have enough money to pay for them, Guenther said.
Mazhar is being charged with retail theft and aggravated battery.
