My name is Emily Alvarado and I’m a Medill sophomore. I am from Austin, Texas and (naturally) proud of it, though I have significantly warmed up to this not so warm, not so “west” Midwest city. As my last name suggests, though American by citizenship I am very much Mexican by culture. “On paper” I am considered a minority in a few different categories, so the time I devote to hot button topics in this column will most likely be related to minority issues. (My only purpose in covering those topics is to learn more about them; I’m not a fan of “chip-on-my-shoulder” attitudes).
On a lighter note, I also like entertainment. I’m no movie critic, but I like to explore things like the baffling power of a poorly made, but highly romantic chick flick. Writing for The Daily Northwestern will be a new experience for me, and I am absolutely pumped about the opportunity.
