Los Angeles-based mash-up duo Super Mash Bros. and local hip-hop artist Rhymefest were added to the Dillo Day lineup Tuesday, filling out Saturday’s performance roster.
The hype for Super Mash Bros. has already spread across campus in the past few weeks, said Mayfest co-chair Katie Halpern, so they knew the act would be a “real crowd pleaser” by the time they officially announced it.
This is the first year Dillo Day will feature a mash-up act instead of a DJ, Halpern said.
“The art of the mash-up is extremely popular right now,” she said. “It’s replaced the typical DJ scene. So we are excited to bring something new and relevant to the lineup this year.”
Rhymefest, known for his collaboration with another native Chicagoan, Kanye West, in writing the Grammy-winning “Jesus Walks,” brings a “hardcore” sound to the lineup, said Mayfest’s other co-chair, Michael Gebhardt.
“Nelly is our childhood,” he said. “But Rhymefest has more cred.”
Halpern agreed.
“He is a little less bubble gum, so he rounds out the lineup and we hope he will please a lot of the hip-hop fans on campus,” she said.
