I remember feeling like I had the worst hangover of my life – and I’ve been known to have the worst hangovers fathomable.
What I didn’t remember was throwing back the usual number of shots it takes for me black out, which has only happened once freshman year. I remember starting to walk home but don’t remember going to sleep. All I could remember was not remembering.
For most people that fall victim to date-rape drugs like Rohypnol and GHB, not remembering can be one of the most terrifying experiences – not knowing what you did, who you were with, where you were… coming up totally blank, like I did.
According to the Office of National Drug Control Policy, an estimated half-million college women have been forcibly raped, 160,000 women have experienced “drug-facilitated” rape and another 200,000 have been raped while incapacitated. Our survey indicates 24 Northwestern students have been roofi ed, and another 18 report having been raped at NU. Even though people generally tend to associate being roofi ed and raped with female victims, three male respondents state they have been roofi ed and one male student even reported being raped. Whether those males that were roofi ed were drugged intentionally or not, it is crucial to recognize that it can happen to guys. No matter where you are or your gender, we could also use a sobering reminder to watch our drinks – and watch who’s mixing them. It takes less than a second for someone make you completely forget everything you’d probably want to remember.
