Softball: Illini send Cats to first two-game Big Ten skid in three-plus years

Updated April 26, 9:55 p.m.

Losing is never fun. For No. 11 Northwestern, it is especially difficult.

The Wildcats (28-11, 12-4 Big Ten) hadn’t lost consecutive Big Ten games in over three years. But that’s exactly what they did this weekend.

The Cats fell 10-8 on Saturday in a game that included three lead changes. On Sunday, the Illini triumphed 9-8.

To make matters worse, Illinois (26-14, 9-6) won both games on walk-off home runs.

“I think this weekend our team showed a lot of fight,” senior shortstop Tammy Williams said. “That’s all you can ask from the team – just to fight and compete with that other team.”

Despite the unfamiliar result, the offense didn’t do anything different than it has the rest of the season, continuing its consistent production. In the two games, the offense scored 16 runs on 18 hits.

“The fact that our offense battled and kept us in both games was huge,” coach Kate Drohan said.
