The departure of former athletic director Mark Murphy is a loss for Northwestern University sports fans nationwide.
The Green Bay Packers have found a capable executive to run their operations. NU athletic programs flourished during his tenure: National championships in women’s lacrosse, women’s tennis and men’s swimming, two Women’s College World Series appearances, two football bowl games, and huge strides in wrestling and men’s soccer. The athletic endowment has gone from the smallest in the Big Ten to the sixth-largest.
On behalf of many proud alumni, I thank Murphy for a job well done and wish him success in the National Football League. Hopefully the administration will meet the tall task of finding a comparable replacement.
