New projects, new faces at year’s first ASG Senate meeting

Name. Year. Major. Hometown.

Freshmen are not the only ones introducing themselves with these four elements. Associated Student Government senators, new and returning, were also introducing themselves at the first Senate meeting of the year on Wednesday night.

“This year’s Senate is going to be the best ever,” said Will Upton, a Weinberg junior. “We’re going to get things done.”

To accomplish that, ASG officials briefly outlined their goals for the year. ASG President Jon Webber encouraged senators to be creative and excited for what’s ahead.

“The beginning of the year is a great opportunity to get involved,” the Weinberg senior said. “It’s a time to make student government what you want it to be.”

Some committees are already moving in that direction. Executive Vice President Matt Bogusz announced the completion of a resource center for student groups. The center is furnished with new computers, software and a printer and copier, the Weinberg junior said.

The new printer will aid student groups in lowering publicity costs: ASG will charge 20 cents per color copy, cheaper than other printing shops in Evanston, they said.

The student services committee is working on several projects, outlined in Weinberg junior Nate West’s executive board report to the Senate. West, the student services vice president, hopes to create an Evanston business guide, enable Munch Money to be used in off-campus locations and improve shuttle reliability.

Both Webber and Speaker of the Senate Jesse Garfinkel, a Weinberg sophomore, urged new senators and students interested in joining a committee to attend Sunday’s Senate retreat. At this training session, the new ASG members will be introduced to ASG policies and procedures, and will be assigned to committees.

In addition, Financial Vice President Aneesa Arshad, a SESP senior, and Bogusz announced both senator and non-senator openings on their committees.

The Student Activities Finance Board has two non-senator and three senator positions up for election. The committee advises and funds larger on-campus student groups, such as A&O Productions and Hillel.

The Executive Committee has three senator and three non-senator positions open. The committee advises and funds smaller on-campus student groups, such as Boomshaka and 64 Squares.

The elections for these positions will be held next week.

In gearing up for Fall Quarter funding, supplemental funding applications must be submitted to the Student Activities Finance Board by Oct. 26. This is the first step for larger student groups to gain funds pooled from the Student Activities Fee, a $44 fee all students pay each quarter.
