It’s OK If You Use Your Hands (Restaurant Guide)

Eating with your fingers is not a faux pas at local Ethiopian restaurant Addis Abeba, 1322 Chicago Ave.

In fact, a hands-on approach to dining is considered fine etiquette at the 11-month-old branch of 48-year-old owner Tensaye Gizaw’s establishment, where serving spoons are the only utensils on the table.

“Ethiopian food has made inroads in other states and big cities, but there are still only six Ethiopian restaurants in the Chicago area,” said Gizaw, a native of Ethiopia. “That’s fine – it means less competition for us.”

Many of Addis Abeba’s employees are of Ethiopian descent and are more than willing to offer instruction on how to forklessly – if not flawlessly –
