When Medill freshman Alex Johnson is looking to make some extra spending money, she takes tests.
Johnson discovered an untapped money source – participating in research experiments on campus – one day during Fall Quarter when she was walking past the bulletin boards at Norris University Center.
“There are a lot of people on campus doing research that requires participants, and they post flyers pretty readily,” she said.
Since then, Johnson has taken part in about five experiments, mostly through the psychology and sociology departments. Her most recent one, which took place before Winter Break, netted her $100. It was a speech and auditory experiment that required her to go in for 15 minutes a day for 10 consecutive days.
