If you’re looking for a light comedy this weekend with no real depth at all, go rent John Tucker Must Die. Trust me when I say there will still be copies available at Blockbuster.
But if you want more of a challenge in what you see this weekend, check out Reckless. The show, put on by WAVE productions, starts tonight.
The story centers around Rachel, played by Communication sophomore Maite Alvarez. It’s about “a girl whirlwinded into this massive chaos and ending up coming out much more true to herself,” Alvarez says.
For Rachel, things are going well in her seemingly perfect life until her husband Tom (Communication junior Stephan Georgiou) decides to take a contract out on her life in the first scene of the show.
After Rachel runs off when Tom admits his mistake, she’s taken in by physical therapist Lloyd (Communication junior Govind Kumar) and his paraplegic wife (Communication sophomore Claire Neumann).
Things take a bizarre turn when characters reveal secrets to Rachel, which tragically ends in the death of two of the four characters.
“This play takes us to really dizzying levels of desperation and particularly gripping in contrast to the hilarity of the situation,” says Communication junior and director Jeremy Bloom.
Bloom chose the show because he thought college students could relate to the characters (not in the husband-taking-the-contract-out-on-your-life way, more the how-did-I-end-up-here way).
“I think while it’s riotously funny, it has really powerful resonances with where I am in my own life and sort of what this college experience has been like for many of us,” Bloom says.
Reckless will run Nov. 16-18 in McCormick Auditorium in Norris Thurs. at 8 p.m., Fri. and Sat. at 8 and 11 p.m. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at Norris Box Office or at the door.
