Boring DVD extras don’t take ‘flight’

While an aesthetically tight and mildly entertaining thriller with a decent performance from Jodie Foster and shiny cinematography, Flightplan just doesn’t fly.

And, of course, a film’s DVD is only as strong as the flick itself. With fairly few features, the DVD package also disappoints. Naturally, there’s the now-obligatory director’s commentary, but it lacks character. Director Robert Schwentke discusses everything from the numerous red herrings within the plot to his film as a commentary upon a post-9/11 world.

Oh, and he worries his movie will inspire terrorists – not a commentary-saving thought. I’d much rather hear from Foster; this is her movie.

In addition to the commentary, the DVD includes an uninspired making-of featurette and a look at the design of the picture’s plane. With nothing spectacular, the extras section of this DVD feels a bit skimpy. Such a successful movie usually earns more DVD lovin’. Perhaps a special edition is on its way.

Either way, the DVD hardly merits a rental, but if you go to Blockbuster, you’ll find Flightplan out of stock. So? Rent Red Eye instead.
