Board to implement GRE changes in October 2006

Students taking the Graduate Record Examinations in the fall will pay more and might not be able to submit scores immediately to their target schools.

These details are updates to the GRE changes announced in October 2005. The latest round of alterations was posted on the Educational Testing Service Web site several weeks ago and will take effect in October 2006. More than half a million students take the GRE each year.

The new GRE, the standardized test for prospective graduate students, will be centered on a scale of 110 to 150, as opposed to the 200 to 800 point scale used in the past. Educational Testing Service will look at the first three test administrations in October and November 2006 before finalizing the upper reaches of the point scale. This means that students taking one of the first administrations will have to wait longer for their scores to be released, said Matt Fidler, GRE program manager for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions.
