Try something new this weekend – instead of going out to a restaurant, to the movies or to a bar, go to a wedding. And not just any wedding, but an Italian wedding fraught with all of the animated characters and distractions imaginable.
Tony ‘N’ Tina’s Wedding is an interactive piece where audience members take part in the union of two families during the marriage process. Currently playing at the Piper’s Alley Theater, 1608 N. Wells St., the show first premiered in July of 1993 and has enjoyed a loyal following ever since due to its offbeat premise, interactive nature and overall joviality.
The three-hour extravaganza is a full- evening affair, as it tries to mirror the structure of a true wedding. Audience members have the chance to eat, drink, dance and interact with the actors, all of whom portray different character archetypes. The show chronicles the family tensions that arise when two individuals of different backgrounds join in marriage. And with a pre-show bar stop, an incredulous, disaster-ridden ceremony and a reception at Vinnie Black’s emporium, this all-inclusive show is packed with activity and hilarity.
In order to enhance the show’s sense of realism, all of the actors practice their predefined roles at actual weddings. The cast members try desperately to represent every type of character that could make a wedding interesting. In the end, just like at the real thing, some audience members will leave wondering why they got stuck next to obnoxious and intoxicated Uncle Tony.
Tony ‘N’ Tina’s Wedding is playing on an open run at the Piper’s Alley Theater. Tickets cost $56-$70. Tickets and showtimes are available online at www.tonyntina.com or by calling (312) 664-8844.
