ASG announces grants after visit by aldermen

Cheryl Wollin and Elizabeth Tisdahl, who won their respective elections as First and Seventh Ward aldermen Tuesday, made an appearance at Wednesday night’s Associated Student Government Senate meeting to thank student voters and campaign workers.

“It is a new day for the city council,” Wollin said. “An open, fresh dialogue is necessary. You can’t come in with a preconceived notion of how things will work or won’t work.”

Wollin also said she would work to install more lights along Sheridan Road, a proposal that has been stalled in the Evanston Preservation Commission.

Also, ASG allotted seven student groups received $4,952.44 in grants at the weekly meeting. The recipients were TONIK Tap, 64 Squares, Kaibigan, Americans for Informed Democracy, Campus Greens, Campus Kitchens and Music Learning Community.

The money comes from the Office of Student Affairs, which established a $7,000 fund for B- and T-status student groups approved by ASG last Winter Quarter after lobbying William Banis, vice president for student affairs. These groups are different from A-status groups because they do not receive funding from the Student Activities Fee, a $120 fee each NU student pays.

64 Squares, a student group of about 35 members that plays a fast-paced variation of chess, received about $652 to pay for six chess clocks.

“This will completely change how the club is going right now,” said 64 Squares president Arpan Patel, a Weinberg senior.

TONIK Tap, NU’s only tap dance company, received $1,068.40 in two grants for a new tap floor, costumes and backdrops, said Howard W. Buffett, ASG Executive Vice President.

In other news, Student Government Reform Committee co-chairman, Kunal Kumar, presented a report on the body’s first meeting, which focused on “identifying the problem with ASG.”

Kumar said the ad-hoc committee found four broad problems with ASG: It is bureaucratic, not accountable, lacks good student group relations and doesn’t need to make tough choices.
