ASG approves increase for club sports budget, aldermanic poll

Associated Student Government senators voted Wednesday to lobby administrators to increase funds for club sports teams.

This legislation calls for the club sports budget to increase by $111,750, to a total of $204,047. This plan was presented to students at the Feb. 10 meeting, which was attended by about 25 students.

“We’re excited that the feedback from the student body was so positive,” said Alex Lurie, ASG’s student services vice president.

If lobbying is successful, the money would be available for teams next year.

Senators also passed a bill seeking student opinions about the upcoming aldermanic election.

The legislation calls for a poll to be established on HereandNow where students can rank the importance of different city-related issues to be addressed by aldermen.

Senators also approved legislation that calls for a forum to be established where students from other Chicago schools can discuss different issues and concerns.

“It will be a positive step forward to bridge relations with other Chicago schools,” said Sen. Cecily Hastings, a Weinberg junior and author of the bill. “This seems the best way to get the schools to start talking.”

Senators also introduced a bill to allow students to express safety concerns directly to an ASG representative, who would forward them to the appropriate administrators.

“We’re trying to let students know that there are safe ways to get around campus,” said Lurie, a Communication junior. “We have resources but they are not taken advantage of.”

Next week, senators will vote on legislation asking the city of Evanston to install blue-light emergency phones at the Noyes Street and Foster Street El stops.
