Early disappointment fuels 8th-place finish (Women’s fencing)

Northwestern women’s fencing coach Laurie Schiller half-jokingly called last weekend’s national competition “sort of a preseason game for us,” but that hardly mattered to Wildcats’ foilist Jessica Florendo.

Florendo, a sophomore, finished eighth out of 91 fencers in Sunday’s Division I women’s foil competition and 14th out of 100 in Saturday’s junior women’s foil at the United States Fencing Association’s North American Cup in Overland Park, Kan., Friday through Monday.

Five other NU fencers earned national points by finishing in the top 32. Julia F
