Around the nation: Southern showdown even better than SoCo

No. 8 Georgia at No. 3 Auburn

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Location: Auburn, Ala.

TV: CBS

Spread: Auburn by 5

Records: Georgia 8-1, Auburn 9-0

Why tune in: Of the unbeatens, Auburn has the toughest remaining schedule, beginning with this matchup against the team once thought the class of the SEC. A Georgia win may allow the Bulldogs to sneak in the back door of the BCS even if they miss the conference title game. That’s assuming the Tigers fall here, but their No. 2 scoring defense (9.7 per game) may have something to say about that.

No. 18 Miami at No. 10 Virginia

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Location: Charlottesville, Va.

TV: ABC

Spread: Virginia by 3.5

Records: Miami 6-2, Virginia 7-1

Why tune in: What a difference a month makes. The first BCS standings created nothing but controversy when they ranked then-No. 3 Miami ahead of No. 2 Oklahoma. Now, the U is virtually off the radar, and will be out of the running in the ACC if it doesn’t defeat the Cavaliers on Saturday. Meanwhile, Virginia has responded well since its embarrassing 36-3 loss at Florida State. Virginia must continue that trend if it wants to remain tied atop the ACC with rival Virginia Tech and have a shot at the conference title.

No. 7 Utah at Wyoming

Time: 6 p.m.

Location: Laramie, Wyo.

TV: ABC

Spread: Utah by 22

Records: Utah 9-0, Wyoming 6-3

Why tune in: The last time I put a plus-20 spread game on this list, the final was 69-3. But please don’t let that have any bearing on whether you tune in to this showdown. The Utes’ trip to Cowboy Country appears to be their final test of the season. Wyoming, picked by pundits as one of the 20 or so worst teams in the land, look surprisingly good this year, though they’ve been doing it mostly against sub-par competition. But remember: Even if this is a blowout, who doesn’t want to see Utah QB Alex Smith play?

No. 21 Boston College

at No. 13 West Virginia

Time: 11 a.m.

Location: Morgantown, W.V.

TV: ABC

Spread: West Virginia by 7

Records: Boston College 6-2, West Virginia 8-1

Why tune in: Talk about no respect. The Mountaineers lose by six in one of the nation’s toughest road venues (Blacksburg), and they watch as Florida State and Virginia soar ahead of them in the rankings. Still, respect is not what West Virginia needs; it needs wins, as it is assured a BCS bowl with a Big East conference title. The Eagles still have hope for a bowl game.

Texas Tech

at No. 22 Texas A&M

Time: 2:30 p.m.

Location: College Station, Texas

TV: ABC

Spread: A&M by 3

Records: Texas Tech 6-3, Texas A&M 6-3

Why tune in: Both teams are bowl eligible and have no shot at a BCS bowl or the conference title game, but this still has all the makings of a good ol’-fashioned Texas shootout. But with Aggie QB Reggie McNeal’s health in question, the Red Raiders may have a leg up. Even if McNeal doesn’t play, expect 80 points and 1,000 yards.
