Softball faces national champ UCLA in Palm Springs game

Sometimes playing for a Division I team has its perks. Big ones.

The Northwestern softball team is all set to take on three top-15 teams at the Palm Springs Classic in resort-haven Palm Springs, Calif.

On the Wildcats’ dance card is a meeting with defending national champion UCLA on Saturday afternoon. But NU looks to build up some momentum early in games with Alabama and Stanford today. The Cats will wrap things up on Saturday night with a game against Boston College and on Sunday as they face Pacific.

NU began its 2004 season with a 4-1 weekend finish Feb. 6-8 at the Arizona State Triangular in Tempe, Ariz., beating both No. 20 Arizona State and Kansas twice.

Sophomore Sheila McCorkle could spark the Cats’ offense, having hammered three out of the park during the team’s time in Arizona.
