If you don’t know who Long Bones Jones is, then you need to see “Out Da Box” this weekend.
Members of the African-American Theatre Ensemble say they’ll hold nothing back in their annual sketch comedy show. The show’s theme this year is “WBLK Radio: Through the Wire.”
Besides cast favorite Long Bones Jones, this year’s show will feature a multitude of outrageous characters in skits about everything from aliens to evictions.
“ODB is completely different from anything else on campus,” says the show’s director, Communication senior Adrienne Holloway. But while ODB might leave audience members teary-eyed from laughing, taken aback by discussions of certain “sensitive” subjects (such as a guest appearance by the “hooded mugger”) and stuffed from the chicken and biscuits that will be sold during the performances, the show is about more than just humor and “crossing the line.”
“It’s funny, but it’s also a social commentary,” says Holloway. “We’re saying something through our characters.”
Cast member Russ Armstrong, a Weinberg sophomore, agrees.
“ODB will force you to see the humor in some of the largest tragedies (that exist) right now — racism, sexism and bigotry,” he says.
Assistant director Keven Brown, a Weinberg junior, says that “Out Da Box” is the highlight of Winter Quarter.
“Basically, anything you can do on a stage, we’re doing it,” he says.
