Associated Student Government are slated to vote on two bills and hear four new pieces of legislation at tonight’s Senate meeting, but they will have to act this week with two fewer senators.
Student groups Habitat for Humanity and Middle Eastern Students Association lost their senator spots because of excess absences.
Student-group senators with too many absences are allowed to appeal once, said ASG Rules Chairwoman Noreen Khalid, a Communication junior. The two groups appealed last month and then failed to attend two more meetings — an automatic cause to lose the position in Senate.
Tim Lan, Habitat for Humanity co-president, said his group at first was worried about losing its senator but in the end was not too upset.
“By not having an ASG senator, we don’t really lose that much,” said Lan, a McCormick junior.
The Executive Committee decided Monday night which student groups would have senators for Fall Quarter, Khalid said. The two open spots will be filled by groups on the Executive Committee’s waiting list.
One of tonight’s bills asks ASG to add “disabled” to the list of nondiscrimination guidelines for ASG-recognized student groups. The bill’s co-authors, Rainbow Alliance Sen. John Hughes and Shepard Residential College Sen. Jonathan Marino, said adding the clause would update ASG guidelines to match that of the university.
The other bill, written by ASG President Mike Fong and Technology Director Benjamin Cherry, deals with making an online guide of apartment ratings similar to the dorm evaluations that began this year based on CTECs.
Four others bills will be introduced this week but will are not scheduled for a vote until next week. The new bills call for:
Evanston City Council to hold off on a redistricting plan until Fall Quarter, when more students can offer input;
Northwestern to create a central location for recyclables not collected in dorms;
Searle Student Health Services to make optional the now-mandatory pre-gynecological visits; and
more on-campus dining venues to accept credit and debit cards.
In other business, applications are available online for the new Technology Committee and eight off-campus senator spots. The applications, open to all undergraduates, and details can be found on the Web at asg.northwestern.edu.
The ASG Senate meeting begins at 7 p.m. tonight in the Northwestern Room at Norris and is open to the NU community.
